The Federal Government on Saturday officially commenced the reconstruction of the Dikwa-Ngala and Bama-Banki roads in Borno State, a strategic intervention aimed at reinforcing regional security and accelerating post-insurgency economic recovery in the North-East.

​Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the ceremony, stated that the projects are central to the administration’s plan to bridge infrastructure deficits that have stifled growth in the region.

He emphasized that road connectivity is vital for national stability, noting that dilapidated infrastructure disproportionately impacts the vulnerable.

​“We are not unaware of the importance of road infrastructure to our economy and our communities,” Mr Shettima said. “When roads deteriorate, the economy suffers. Transporters spend more on vehicle repairs, households bear the burden through higher prices, citizens find it difficult to travel, while security personnel and emergency responders struggle to access vulnerable communities.”

A Resumed Initiative

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed that both road projects were initially awarded in 2021 but were stalled due to persistent security challenges along the corridors. He noted that the ministry has since reviewed the contract terms to fast-track delivery.

Under the revised framework, the Dikwa-Ngala road has been restructured into phases, with the first phase covering 32.25 kilometres at a revised cost of approximately N67 billion. Similar adjustments were applied to the Bama-Banki corridor to ensure rapid construction.

​“This project must commence without delay,” Mr Umahi stated, confirming that the contractor has already mobilised equipment to the site.

​The Minister lauded the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, for his proactive support, which includes providing critical materials such as laterite and access to quarry sites.

“I think other state governors should emulate this level of commitment to federal projects,” Mr Umahi added. He further praised President Tinubu, describing him as “a leader with the courage to undertake projects previously considered impossible.”

Strategic Importance

The two highways serve as critical conduits for trade with neighbouring Cameroon and are essential for humanitarian logistics and military mobility against insurgents.

​Governor Zulum, while speaking at the event, described the flag-off as a significant milestone in the state’s recovery. He highlighted that his administration has consistently prioritised infrastructure as the bedrock for sustainable development.

“The commencement of these projects reflects the strong partnership between the Federal Government and the Borno State Government in rebuilding our state,” the governor said.

Governor  Zulum also acknowledged the contributions of industrialist Aliko Dangote, whose private-sector interventions have played a key role in the resettlement of displaced communities.

​The governor, who expressed strong confidence in the president’s leadership, seized the occasion to declare the support of the people of Borno for Mr Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 presidential election.
