As the 2027 general elections approach, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has challenged Nigerians to prioritize the search for credible, competent, and God-fearing leaders to rescue the nation from its prevailing economic and security woes.
The Sultan, who serves as the President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), gave the charge in his Eid-el-Kabir message on Wednesday. He argued that the country’s path to stability and growth transcends political maneuvering, requiring a blend of divine intervention, patriotism, and a firm commitment to justice.
“Our prayers are always the guiding light toward the choice of our leaders; therefore, we should sustain more prayers in our quest for the best country we desire,” the Sultan stated.
Beyond ballots
The monarch emphasized that while electoral processes are fundamental to democracy, they are insufficient without the moral weight of civic responsibility. He urged the electorate to approach the next election cycle with a focus on integrity and capacity, rather than political patronage or personal ambition.
Addressing the political class, the Sultan issued a stern call for national interest to be placed above partisan agendas. He noted that the survival of the country hinges on leaders who prioritize the welfare of the citizenry, especially as the nation grapples with multifaceted crises.
A Call for National Reflection
Drawing from the tenets of Eid-el-Kabir, the Sultan reminded Nigerians that the season is not merely for celebration but for introspection. He urged the public to imbibe the virtues of sacrifice, obedience, tolerance, and compassion—values he described as essential for national unity and peaceful coexistence.
He expressed optimism that upcoming festivities would be marked by improved security and economic prosperity, provided the nation chooses a path of collective renewal.
State Governance and Pilgrimage
Shifting his focus to the sub-national level, the Sultan commended the Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, for his administration’s ongoing efforts to bolster security and improve the living conditions of residents.
The monarch also lauded the state government’s logistical and financial support for pilgrims embarking on the 2026 Hajj exercise. He prayed for the safety of the pilgrims and a successful journey as they head to Saudi Arabia to fulfill their religious obligations.
