LAGOS, Nigeria — Renowned Nollywood actor John Okafor, widely known as Mr. Ibu, passed away on March 2, 2024. His death was confirmed by family members and has deeply saddened the Nigerian film industry.

Okafor died in hospital on Saturday, Mar.2, after facing serious health issues that previously led to the amputation of his leg due to an undetected arterial infection.

The passing of the beloved actor came just one day after the death of another Nollywood star, Tolani Quadri Oyebamiji, also known by his stage name Sisi Quadri.

The news of Mr. Ibu’s illness first became public in October 2023 when it was reported he needed financial help for medical treatment. In November, his family disclosed that his leg had been amputated in a life-saving procedure.

Tributes have poured in from fans and colleagues alike. Celebrated actress Mercy Johnson Okojie expressed her condolences, saying, “It is well… Rest well sir…,” while Ruth Kadiri added, “Sleep well Papa.”

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) also confirmed Mr. Ibu’s death. Guild President Emeka Rollas, sharing the news via social media, cited the actor’s manager, revealing that Mr. Ibu succumbed to cardiac arrest.

“It’s a sad day for the Actors Guild of Nigeria. Kate Henshaw lost her mother earlier today, and Mr. Ibu suffered cardiac arrest according to his manager for 24 years, Mr. Don Single Nwuzor,” Rollas stated. “I announce with a deep sense of grief that Mr. Ibu didn’t make it. May his soul rest in peace.”

The industry mourns the loss of a comedic giant whose work brought laughter and joy to many.
