In a violent clash in northeastern Borno State, numerous fighters from extremist groups Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West African Province (ISWAP) were killed.
The deadly confrontation occurred in Duji village in Mobbar, a locality in Damasak, Borno State, just five kilometers from the Diffa region in Niger Republic, on Nov. 9, 2023.
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, received information from intelligence sources that the Bakoura Buduma-led faction of Boko Haram, heavily armed, initiated the surprise attack on the rival extremist group situated in its hideouts.
Before the conflict, the Bakoura faction had detained an escapee ISWAP fighter, who was later coerced into leading them to the ISWAP hideouts.
The ensuing firefight, which lasted for over two hours, saw the Boko Haram group gain the upper hand, killing a significant number of ISWAP members while losing only one of their own.
In a related development, Nigerian Army troops from the 68th Battalion in Malam Fatori neutralized an ISWAP leader, Qa’id Abu Hisham, after executing an artillery strike on the ISWAP position at Baulayi in Abadam LGA.
