Borno State Inaugurates First-of-its-Kind Underground Pedestrian Underpass

By Abdulkareem Haruna

Borno State’s Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, officially opened a pioneering underground pedestrian underpass on Friday, designed to enhance road safety by allowing vehicles to drive overhead while pedestrians cross beneath.

The innovative infrastructure project, located near the renowned Gamboru market in Maiduguri, was initiated in response to the risks associated with pedestrian highway crossings.

Since taking office in 2019, Governor Zulum has overseen the execution of more than 700 infrastructure projects. These include Borno’s inaugural flyover, numerous roads, over 20,000 newly constructed and refurbished houses for resettling internally displaced persons and refugees, more than 20 large-scale schools, and over 200 healthcare centers.

These projects form part of his administration’s urban renewal policy.

The underpass commissioning ceremony was attended by Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bukar Tijjani, Head of Service, Barrister Mallam Fannami, along with several commissioners, advisers, permanent secretaries, and other government officials.
