Malumfatori-Bosso International Bridge on the Brink of Collapse, Threatening Vital Connection Between Nigeria and Niger Republic

MALUMFATORI, Nigeria — The Malumfatori-Bosso International Bridge, a crucial link between Nigeria and Niger Republic, is teetering on the edge of collapse, posing a significant threat to the town of Malumfatori and its surrounding areas.

As the rainy season looms, experts fear that the anticipated massive floods may finally bring the bridge to its breaking point.

Situated approximately 300 kilometers away from Maiduguri, Malumfatori is an isolated town on the Nigeria side that heavily relies on the bridge as its only access road to the rest of the world. If the bridge gives way, Malumfatori would effectively be cut off, exacerbating the already challenging situation in the area, plagued by the activities of militant groups such as ISWAP and Boko Haram.

In recent months, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has undertaken multiple trips to visit internally displaced persons (IDPs) by crossing the Malumfatori-Bosso bridge.

The governor’s visits underscore the bridge’s critical importance in providing humanitarian assistance and support to vulnerable communities affected by the ongoing conflict.

Local authorities and engineering experts have repeatedly warned about the deteriorating condition of the bridge, appealing for urgent intervention from the government to prevent a potential catastrophe. However, due to budget constraints and competing priorities, the necessary repairs have been delayed, leaving the bridge in a perilous state.

As the rainy season approaches, the stakes are higher than ever, with the bridge’s collapse looming as a constant threat. Failure to address this critical infrastructure issue could lead to severe consequences not only for Malumfatori but also for the broader regional connectivity between Nigeria and Niger Republic.
